Thank you! To everyone that came to the reading yesterday, Thank you!
I finished my script on Saturday night at 10:30 and the reading on Sunday brought a bunch of dear friends, and a couple of faces I hadn’t seen since the 6 weeks since I started my project.
I very rarely let anyone see anything that is in its rough draft. Usually, I need two rewrites before I feel safe or confident enough to unveil for a critique. However, there simply isn’t time for that – the deadline for this gig is July 31st.
It felt wonderful to share what I’ve been working so hard on. Writing in the morning, and in the car on my lunch break and at night after getting home from the gym till about 1am. It felt good to finally show people that, “See? I haven’t been answering my phone because I really have been working!”
Everyone gave great advice and feedback so now I have direction for the re-write. I didn’t want to say anything at first about the problem that has plagued me since day one – but about 30 pages in, Matt brought it up first and everyone agreed – the lead male character is not clear!
I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT! And I didn’t know how to fix it so hearing it from an outside source was so validating and having male feedback on how I can help my character was PRICELESS! Thank you!
My favorite thing about the reading is when the guys would say something about the female character and all the girls would immediately rush to her defense. I loved it! I could not have asked for that sort of response or even hoped for it. The fact that the guys were bothered or disbelieving about things that women take as a given or obvious… means I hit my mark, and it was awesome to sit back and listen to them both take sides.
I want this gig so bad I can taste it. It’s not like the passing fancy of a cool job that would be fun to have – I really want it, and that’s an unusual and exciting feeling. So writing till 1 in the morning and sitting in my car at lunch is totally worth it.
Thank you, guys for your show of support and all your helpful critique. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it! I begin my first round of re-writes this week!
All in all:
Six weeks of writing – worth it.
Copy printing – 50$
Snack foods and drinks – 60$
Hearing all my friends arguing and laughing – - priceless.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you all!
